North London trio Ivy Lab were brought together out of a shared enthusiasm for experimentations on the fringes of the Drum’n’Bass scene. Several years on from that initial coming together, the collective go from strength to strength; propagating a new generation of sub-genres housed within the framework of their ’20/20’ project.

The middle of the noughties saw collective-elder Gove Kidao build up a sustained presence as a Producer/DJ operating under the name Sabre, working on disparate interpretations of the drum and bass genre for labels ranging from Renegade Hardware to Metalheadz to Darkestral. In 2009 Critical Music served not only as the home for Sabre’s debut long player, but also the debut track from an unknown young talent advocated by Sabre to the label. J Fogel a.k.a Stray enjoyed broad acclaim for his inaugural release “Timbre”, and began to work on further projects for Critical Music, including collaborating with Sabre himself. Unknown to them both, each had independently struck up a relationship with another emerging talent operating under the moniker Halogenix. Collaborating as separate duos soon expanded into combining into a formal trio, casting the foundations of the collective that exists today.

A string of standout singles and E.Ps for their principle label-partner Critical music with tracks like “Live on your smile” and “20 Questions” have followed up on the groups melancholic, acid-tinged strand first showcased in the anthemic single “Oblique” that initially brought the trio into the limelight. Additional support has come in the form of Goldie’s Metalheadz recordings with the release of “Make it Clear” and a string of remixes for acts and labels including Sub Focus (Universal), TC (3beat) and Anushka (Brownwood). With a secure reputation as purveyors of thoughtful, melodic drum’n’bass now affirmed, the group have increasingly been turning their attention to experiments in cross-pollination. The collective now find themselves heavily invested in the movement operating under the stop-gap monicker of ‘Halftime’ - A motley assortment of actors from across the bass music landscape applying their sonic-heritage to experiments with hip-hop and drum machine electronica. 2014 saw the birth of ‘2020’. Initially a London clubnight set up to act as a home for the halftime movement, the project is expanding to encompass a record label, 2020 clubnight appearances across the U.K, and the inclusion of a broader collective of artists both established and emerging.

By no means has the scope of the Ivy Lab venture put an end to solo endeavours from the collective’s members. Stray has progressed to amass an impressive catalogue of music including work for Giles Peterson’s Brownswood label, and a remix commission for Mercury award nominee Kate Tempest. Perhaps his most celebrated projects have arrived under the stewardship of dBridge’s Exit Records who have released several stand-out EP’s with tracks such as “Eazy Boy” & “Matchsticks” garnering particular attention for their early-adoption of themes that have gone on to codify the ‘Halftime’ movement. Halogenix is the most recent of the collective to establish a solo presence. 2014 saw a notable upscaling in ambition commencing with “Her Waves” featuring on Critical Music followed by his most impressive project to date in the form of the “All Blue” E.P on Goldie’s Metalheadz record label.

Ivy Lab head into the horizon not only with an anchored presence at the heart of the drum and bass landscape, but also a secured reputation as pioneers helping to develop the destiny of a newly enfranchised movement.

Beats Antique
It’s impossible to describe Beats Antique using just a single genre. One listen to their forthcoming album, Shadowbox (released on their own Beats Antique Records imprint), and their unique hybrid of sound makes perfect sense; their ability to blend so many different kinds of music in to an incredibly vibrant, distinctive and peerless album is what this band has been doing for the past ten years.

Sidecar Tommy, David Satori and Zoe Jakes make up Beats Antique, who is releasing their 10th album on October 5th to commemorate their tenth year as a band. They’ve mounted a larger-than-life cross-country tour that will take their vision to theaters across America. “Shadowbox is both the title of our new album, the theme of our tour, and our new store front in Berkeley CA. We decided to bring it all together on this release.“

Mostly recorded at their studio in Oakland (which has been around since the 50s), the Bay Area band also recorded in Russia and Israel. “We were lucky to record in both Moscow and Tel Aviv, because we had shows there and wanted to connect with the local artists. We had amazing sessions in both locations; In Moscow we recorded on the outskirts of the city in a wild Industrial complex. We ended up going through strange corridors into this plush bamboo-floored-Hare-Krishna-owned recording studio with state of the art gear. When we were in Tel Aviv, we gave a call to a local legend Yossi Fine and he helped us get time at Pluto Studios, which is one of the best in the city. We recorded with Talya Solan and her amazing group of musicians. We used elements of the Tel Aviv session to create our track “Bdna Salam,” which is raising money for Syrian refugees.” Along with Talya other features on Shadowbox include Lafa Taylor, Alam Khan, Tatiana Kalmykova, brasshouse trio Too Many Zooz (who are touring with Beats Antique), Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Dana Elle, Madoline Tasquin and Medium Troy Orchestra.

Shadowbox is a retrospective of sorts, with Beats Antique pulling from all of their previous work as almost a homage to the first ten years of their career. “This will be our first full album produced in Beats Antique’s recording studio/dance performance space. We feel like Shadowbox touches on all our styles from down-temp Middle Eastern influences to cinematic orchestral arrangements. The songwriting process is also different for every song. Sometimes David will come in with a melody and Sidecar will add the bass and beats, and vise versa. One thing that always makes the songwriting process unique is that Zoe creates and arranges music based around stories she wants to tell though dance, so sometimes the performance aspect influences the creation of the music.”

In June, the group premiered the first single, “Killer Bee,” featuring Lafa Taylor, on Billboard.com. The track is “about standing up to prejudices. Just because someone calls you a killer bee, doesn’t mean you need to kill. We want people to define themselves and not be defined by what people think they should be.” In addition to being a ‘killer’ track, with a compelling music video directed by Kyrian Bobeerian, Beats Antique donated a percentage of the proceeds from their July 1st show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre to The Honeybee Conservancy, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of bees.

An enthusiastic touring band, a new album also means a new tour, and since Beats Antique is all about the ‘concept,’ Shadowbox (the album and the idea) is another opportunity for them to get the creative juices flowing for the live shows. The band plan to use shadows, light, Indonesian shadow puppetry, custom-created lanterns, dance, story telling, crowd participation and more to make sure this is an unforgettable visual spectacle for their audience.

Shadowbox, an album that is an amalgamation of the history of Beats Antique, merged with a tour that will both tease and excite the senses, shows off what this band does best – transform, innovate and revolutionize what you think you know about music.

PRESS: Exmag is for the people!

"It is undeniable that these guys have modern hip-hop originality with the smooth, timeless style of jazz. From their street style to their verging-on Minnesota niceness, there is nothing less than real about these fellas. Always about the music, always about creating, the most attractive part about them ... is their obvious authenticity and raw artistry. Keeping their genuine interests as first priority ... the guys continue creating as a whole culture builds itself around the products of their imaginations."

-EDMChicago

While Exmag and Kanye West come from vastly different genres and career stages, they are making parallel moves in live entertainment by turning the concert’s traditional role in album marketing on its head.

- Forbes

From the sultry vibes of “Go Up” to the funky beats of “Not The Last Time,” the listener goes from hip swivels to full body oscillations. Featuring only instrumentals on this track, Exmag exhibits their love of funk and soul as well as their skill in creating it. Thick and encompassing, “Not The Last Time” is as familiar as it is unique, reaching across genres and audiences. Their playful and uplifting sound can easily enliven any dancefloor, from the sticky floors of a night club to the dusty ground of a music festival.

In a feedback loop of adventure, music, and love, CloZee and her fans are ready to let the force of the sound carry everyone to places they have never been before. Being based simultaneously in Toulouse, France and on stages across the world makes this electronic musician stand out. With inspirations far afield from music – a painting, the weather, a dream – in her craft, Chloé Herry’s derivations are difficult to trace.
Under the broad structure of electronic and bass music, and informed by sound the world over, CloZee finds her best fit in World Bass’ corner.
CloZee has performed on many continents: from Coachella to India, on four US Tours, and everywhere around her native France. She is a standout on the roster of her labels, Gravitas Recordings & Otodayo Records. Followers in many languages drive streams
counted in millions. But art’s ability to transport others is this talented producer’s special magic – manifest whenever someone presses play.
In the way the clean curve of a Japanese roof is understated and exotic, CloZee pulls her power from a bold simplicity. Her classical guitar roots allow her an informed, melodic space that draws influence from flamenco to edIT of The Glitch Mob. This melting pot of instrumentation and cinematic flair puts listeners in a mood to move, with international crowds now cultivating the evolution of her genre. Chloé says she rarely lays down only electronic sounds. Her favorite sources are organic and real.
To describe her life, CloZee grins and dramatizes her mind exploding. With traction growing stateside, she is set to expand far beyond the transformational festivals and tours
where she grew the same roots that nourished Bassnectar, Beats Antique, and Bonobo.
CloZee is breaking through the canopy and into the sun. Come see her fly.

This is a party for the people of the Playa and for those who just like to get down. David Hohme from Brooklyn has built a following at the Burn playing sets that include Kalliope, the Robot Heart bus, Bubbles and Bass and Distrikt. Dexx and Zae of Secret Sessions in Sedona have been building the deep house scene in the red rock desert. They have also been spinning on the Playa at Playa Skool, Big Imagination, Christina, Pink Heart and HeadSpace. We are keeping this lineup short and sweet so our DJs can take us on a journey and do some storytelling.

You are invited to participate - Dress to express. Share your gifts. Show your talents. Bring some friends and make some new ones. Through communal effort, we will keep the vibes high and the dance floor bumpin.

With his alarm set to NYC’s Hot 97 throughout elementary school, Jasha started making beats at a young age, and created Space Jesus as a vessel to express his personal experiences through music. With a focus on alien basslines, gangster beats, and future feels, the Spaceman imprints his signature sound onto each genre he graces. MINNESOTA-
Christian Bauhofer at first glance comes off as the unassuming dude yawning next to you in class, a kind of lumberjack-nerd fusion in his glasses and scruffy facial hair. However, wait until the sun goes down and add a couple drinks and a whole lot of bass — and quiet, smiley Christian assumes his party-crushing alter-ego: Minnesota.

"My goal is to make bass-heavy dubstep/glitch-hop music that'll get you dancing, but is not the same old, three-note transformer-step ... I try to focus more on the melodic side of dubstep, and hopefully, make quality songwriting a more relevant factor in the genre." Bauhofer says.

In the past two years his producing has taken off, with both originals and remixes gaining great popularity on sites like Soundcloud.com. In Minnesota productions, big influences show through from songwriters Bauhofer looks up to — artists such as Mimosa, Martyparty, and Modeselektor. His first EP "Panda Snatching Tycoon" was released to great acclaim in January 2011 on Tycho Records, featuring three original tracks: "Push It," "Purple Daze," and "Twisted."

Minnesota tracks are heard in dubstep/glitch sets all over the world, including those from Bassnectar, PANTyRaid, Mimosa, MartyParty, LowRiderz, and Tokimonsta,to name a few. His latest and greatest remix of "California Dreamin'" by the Mamas & the Papas has been getting tons of play — most notably by dubstep trailblazer Bassnectar a.k.a. Lorin Ashton, on his current U.S. tour.

"Quickly becoming a staple in my sets," Ashton said about Minneosta track "Push It," "Perfect for when I need a track that is epic and churning but also melodically hype."

One of the best things about Bauhofer is his incredible diversity in both his production and DJ sets. Any promoter can be assured that a bill featuring the name Minnesota on it will be pleasing to any crowd. He has opened for a wide range of acts, from Flying Lotus to Ghostland Observatory, Rusko to Benny Benassi, RJD2 to Excision, and many more.

The future looks bright for Bauhofer, so much so that he is taking a break from UC Santa Cruz this spring to focus strictly on music. With multiple EPs coming out on MalLabel and Simplify records in the next few months, this might be Bauhofer's smartest move yet.

Thievery Corporation
www.thieverycorporation.com

When they met in the mid-1990s, Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton and Rob Garza instantly bonded over their shared passion for bossa nova. Dedicating their 1996 debut 'Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi' to bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Washington, D.C.-based duo have spent nearly two decades creating boundary-warping, complexly crafted electronic music partly inspired by bossa nova's intricate rhythms and lush textures. Now, with their seventh studio album 'Saudade,' Thievery Corporation present their first release devoted entirely to the Brazilian-born genre that first connected them. "We always try to progress into something different and stretch our musical chops, and taking a whole album to dive into this one sound seemed like a really great way to do that," says Hilton. Adds Garza: "It's a bit of a departure for us, but at the same time these are our roots, this is what brought us together. It's us coming full circle from electronic music back to something organic before we move on to our next chapter."

Released on their own label ESL Music, 'Saudade' borrows its title from a Portuguese word meaning "a longing for something or someone that is lost, a contented melancholy, or, simply, the presence of absence." "Saudade is the essence or feeling of true bossa nova," explains Hilton, who names "those warm, soulful, melancholic vocals" as one of the elements of bossa nova that's most alluring to him. Drawing influence from classic Brazilian performers like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa, and Luis Bonfa, along with Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone, and more modern artists like electro-samba pioneer Isabelle Antena.Saudade achieves its delicate yet deeply sensuous sound with the help of more than a dozen guest musicians. With each track sung by one of five female vocalists (including longtime Thievery cohort LouLou Ghelichkhani, newcomer Elin Melgarejo, Nouvelle Vague singer Karina Zeviani, Argentine chanteuse Natalia Clavier, and former Bitter:Sweet singer/songwriter Shana Halligan), the endlessly mesmerizing album also features such guests as U.N.K.L.E. drummer Michael Lowery, Argentine singer/songwriter Federico Aubele, and master Brazilian percussionist Roberto Santos.

Thievery Corporation Present Their First Release Devoted Entirely to the Brazilian-Born Genre that First Connected Them

Although Thievery Corporation stay true to traditional bossa nova's elegant fusion of samba and jazz all throughout 'Saudade,' the album is rich with strange and wonderful flourishes that revel in the duo's hyper-inventive tendencies. Opening with the dusky "Decollage," 'Saudade' glides from the smoldering and string-drenched "Quem Me Leva" to the hushed and mysterious "Sola In Citta" (an Italian-sung nod to the legendary sound tracks of Ennio Morricone, featuring Wurlitzer electric piano by Enea Diotaiuti) to the sweetly ethereal "No More Disguise" (a dream-like piece laced with orchestral strings and bolero rhythms). With the instrumental title track serving as its gently stunning centerpiece, 'Saudade' also offers the sultry and spacey"Claridad" (a swaying Latin number propelled by analog organ beats) and the French lullaby of "Le Coeur" (featuring the sublime saxophone work of Frank Mitchell, Jr.). And on the final track "Depth of My Soul," Halligan delivers a haunting vocal performance that merges with the song's swirling symphonic soundscape to hypnotic effect.

Saudade is the Essence or Feeling of True Bossa Nova

Over the years, Thievery Corporation have given nods to their bossa-nova influence on individual album tracks, slipping those quietly enchanting songs into recordings that reveal the duo's careful studying of everything from Jamaican dub reggae to punk to vintage film soundtracks to psychedelic space rock. After coming up with sketches for several bossa-nova-style numbers while recording their last studio album (2011's Culture of Fear), Garza and Hilton considered releasing an EP showcasing a handful of Brazilian-inspired songs. "The more we worked on those songs, the more we got into the vibe of that vintage, organic sound," recalls Hilton. "Making an album fully dedicated to that sound felt like a good idea, especially at a time when the electronic dance music world is so saturated and there's not much of a focus on musicianship." Rather than feeling hemmed in by the unfamiliar approach of creating music solely in one style, Thievery Corporation found a great deal of freedom in writing and recording the songs that make up 'Saudade.' "In a way it was really liberating to do something out of our wheelhouse, to put ourselves in a totally different mindset and immerse ourselves in this one particular genre," notes Garza.

We're Still Chopping Up Beats, But This Time We're Making Them Sound Warm And Vintage

Now on 'Saudade,' Thievery Corporation are once again changing direction, trading the fiery energy of their last two albums for a wistful mood and summery spirit.a shift that both members found highly refreshing. "Even though we're very socially conscious, it's nice to take a break from the political theme and just concentrate creating some beautiful songs in the same vein as all these old records that we love," says Garza. And as one ofthe most influential and respected names on the electronic/dance music scene, Thievery Corporation also discovered their own breed of rebellion and innovation in committing themselves to a time-worn genre on 'Saudade.'"We're still chopping up beats, but this time we're making them sound warm and vintage.which is not at all what's happening in electronic music right," says Hilton. "What we're doing here is pretty traditional and timeless-sounding, and in that it's completely contrarian."

"The Music They Were Playing And The Whole Mood Of The Place Was Very Inspiring."

Thievery Corporation was hatched in 1995 when Hilton and Garza were introduced by a mutual friend at Washington, D.C.'s Eighteenth Street Lounge . a popular gathering place for musicians and nightlife seekers that is co-owned by Hilton. Hilton had been producing parties and various music events before opening the Lounge with a fellow DJ in the top three floors of a turn-of-the-century mansion just below Dupont Circle. He also had a recording studio, where Garza had once done some music production work, but the two had never met until the night Garza walked into the Lounge.

Emancipator
www.emancipatormusic.com

A search for mind immersing, spine tingling tracks would land many stumbling upon Emancipator. Between the countless tour dates, festivals, and studio time, Emancipator (aka Doug Appling); the Portland, OR based electronic producer, has retained a steady rise of success over the past few years. Playing sold out venues, to the delight of his faithful fans, 2012 proved to be a year of expansion and growth for this talented young musician. Further backed by the support of two highly acclaimed albums, Soon it will be cold enough and Safe in the steep cliffs and the recent launch of his own label, Loci Records, this young entrepreneur shows no signs of slowing down.

Known for its etheric melodies, immaculately smooth samples, and addictive drum beats, Emancipator’s music has captivated a diverse audience across the globe. One might struggle to place a finger on what makes the music so addictive, but would undoubtedly return to the underlying feeling of balance and connection. Now accompanied regularly by the harmonious swells of live violin played by Ilya Goldberg, Emancipator’s live performances have developed into an all-encompassing musical experience.

With the release of his newest album, Dusk to Dawn, the music promises listeners a nostalgic return to the soulful integration of organic hip hop and symphonic layers that first captivated his audience. “Minor Cause”, the first single off Dusk to Dawn proved a buzz-worthy track with its’ video premier on MTV’s Hive – followed by an uproar of enthused listeners wanting more. Trusting his roots yet simultaneously evolving, Emancipator’s fresh new cultivation is nothing short of a renaissance.

(Chicago), Mark found his passion for the luscious world of vinyl, turntables and nightclubs. At 16, Farina began his DJ career as a resident at Chicago's underage mecca, Medusa's. At the same time Mark joined forces with emerging DJs Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka then moved into a loft space called Rednail.
Rednail became infamous not only for raucous parties but also as the home to the trio's first productions under the moniker, Symbols & Instruments. Their release,"MOOD," sold 35,000 copies in the US & UK and is credited as "the first ambient house track." Farina relocated to San Francisco in 1992. Fans embraced Mark's downtempo style and he started co-hosting a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in ʻ93. In 3 short years, Farina established a fanatical, cult-like following for his Mushroom Jazz sound and in 1996, OM Records released the first mixed comp CD, simply titled, Mushroom Jazz. Since then, Mark has released 7 volumes of Mushroom Jazz with 2013 marking the 20th anniversary of the series. Other notable releases include OMʼs Seasons, San Francisco Sessions Vol. 1, Connect, House of Om, Live in Tokyo, and Fabric 40. When Mark's not touring the world, headlining festivals including Harbourlife (Sydney), Southport Weekender (UK), DEMF (Detroit), Coachella (CA) and T in the Park (Scotland), you're likely to find him in his studio working on new releases or podcasts for his label, Great Lakes Audio. On days off he'll be cruising his '68 Toronado with his son, Dylan (aka "little peanut"), and his Yorkie, Pumpkin. Voted as one of the top DJ's in the world by URB, MUZIK and BPM magazines, Mark Farina's taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned Dance Music veterans as well as newcomers to the scene.

From the first glimpses of Robert Balotsky's work as Buku, it was clear that the Pittsburgh native and graduate of Music Technology was onto something. With an effortless grasp on sound design and music theory, the young producer combines deceptively simple and emotive melodies, laden with resounding bass drops and intricate drum patterns. With a love of drums rooting from childhood, his work reflects the obsession – emitting percussive elements only a trained ear could produce.

Behind a kit since age 8, he followed the progression of handling percussion duties for multiple bands throughout his adolescence. Once introduced to digital production, Buku took his techniques to stranger dimensions – and he's been pushing the boundaries ever since.

His early work has placed him at the forefront of a new wave of rising talent amongst East Coast producers. Garnering interest and plays from Starkey, Lunice, Paper Diamond, Shiftee, Clicks & Whistles, Kastle (to name a few), the up-and-comer has been paving a promising road over the last year.

With his debut release, 'Slippy' under the Slit Jockey imprint and a remix of Starkey's 'Command' on Civil Music, Buku is poised to make much larger waves in the coming months: haters beware.

Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Bay Area producer and songwriter Rain. Early childhood photos reveal Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear… a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation… and Phutureprimitive was born.

Phutureprimitive’s music is best described as dripping wet love drops of nasty mind melting sonic bliss. Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove heavy beats and warm, fuzzy bass lines. Often exploring a dark and dense palette, there is also a profound sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating into a full-on kinetic experience. Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to the body, mind and soul.

Bass Physics is a Denver-based duo consisting of A.P. Adair and Luke Sims that came together with one objective in mind: to spread positive vibes through the power of music. Their genre-bending sound is made up of soulful electronic beats fused with live guitar and keys. While some songs weave beautifully expressive sonic landscapes, others explode with power and energy.

Their debut album Lose Your Mind was released in early 2013, containing an eleven-track combination of dream-like glitch-hop intertwined with electronic soul-step. Since then, they have continued to build momentum with a series of follow-up singles and an EP, ‘Where Do We Turn,’ garnering significant attention and establishing themselves as a must see act.

Bass Physics added to their extensive list of festival plays in 2014-2015, making their second consecutive appearance at Global Dance Festival and Decadence NYE, playing Austin’s Euphoria Music Festival, and making their debut appearance on the main stage of Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater, opening for Savoy and Michal Menert. They seek to always keep the party live by bringing energy and emotion to the dance floor.

"A true pioneer and master of musical expression, GriZ (Grant Kwiecinski) stands head-and-shoulders above the competition in terms of the sheer variety of his ever-evolving technical prowess. A tremendously passionate and soulful producer, GriZ has a peerless knack for creating profoundly engaging melodies to offset the presence of his phenomenally designed bass. Where many artists become mired in a over-simplified and standardized method of production for the sake of creative efficiency; GriZ has no qualms sacrificing speed for the sake of quality, technical diversity, and an unrelenting devotion to progress and dynamism. Beginning his saga as a producer at the young age of fourteen, it is immediately evident that his talent and devotion will lead him on a journey of exceptional musical diversity and exploration. From funky rhythms to jazzy melodic embellishment, GriZ effortlessly incorporates his instrumental zeal for the saxophone with his lifelong dedication to soulful, laser-infused beat-making. This is only the beginning for Grant, and already the stylistic range of his material is both inspirational and utterly awe-inspiring." -Written by Ethan Baer

Just outside the jazz mecca of Kansas City springs liberal oasis Lawrence, Kansas -- separated only by the waves of wheat from the epicenter of the electronic music revolution in Colorado. From Lawrence, it would logically follow that an act could rise to prominence fueled by the swing of Basie, the birth of Charlie Parker's bebop, and the wild frontier of electronica. Born in funk and bred in the digital age, live electronic duo The Floozies have burst onto the scene at a time when the industry needed them the most.

Brothers Matt and Mark Hill share the stage just as easily as they share a musical brain. Without a setlist, and without a word between them, Matt's guitar is in lockstep with the thud of Mark's kick. Endless looping and production builds the raw scenery upon which palm muted chugs, searing solos, and wobbling bass paint their dazzling array of colors.

Calling Blockhead a hip-hop producer is a bit like calling Radiohead a rock 'n' roll band. Though he's provided beats for Def Jux artists like Aesop Rock and isn't above the occasional sped-up vocal sample or turntable scratch, Blockhead's ethereal soundscapes go far beyond what most convention hip-hop aspires to.

With just a few (mostly underground) releases, Dilated Peoples energized the rap underground in similar fashion to fellow West Coast crew Jurassic 5. The duo of Evidence and Rakaa came together in the mid-'90s, when they met at many of the same hip-hop shows; after deciding to start making tracks together, they formed Dilated Peoples. Once they added to the fold an excellent turntablist, DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples recorded the singles "Third Degree" and "Work the Angles" for ABB Records. The latter became an underground hit via hip-hop radio and club play, prompting Dilated Peoples' signing to Capitol. The Platform followed in May 2000. The group's follow-up for Capitol, The Expansion Team, was released in late 2001 to positive reviews as well as a Top 40 placing, and the group hit the road the following March, touring with the film Scratch, a documentary about hip-hop DJs and turntablists. Neighborhood Watch followed in 2004. The loosely structured 20/20 was released in 2006 and featured guest appearances from Talib Kweli and reggae great Capleton. Solo projects from all three members kept the group separated until 2014, when they released the album Directors of Photography on the Rhymesayers label.

Daedelus has dedicated his musical career to the war against cliché. Like his mythological namesake, Alfred Darlington is an inventor, a craftsman, a constructor of labyrinths. Others get trapped in the maze; he knows how to build wings.

In the rolling green hills outside of Los Angeles, Spazzkid, the moniker of electronic producer and songwriter Mark Redito, finds refuge in positive beat driven melodies with a yearning to express his ever-evolving love of life and adventure. Once locked in his bedroom producing uplifting beats that made the world feel young, Redito has exploded onto the scene crossing genres and styles with a keen beat maker sensibility that has proven relatable for multifarious crowds, attracting fans of all ages and backgrounds. Following the international success from his debut LP “Desire” (2013), his upcoming EP “Promise” due out July 2014 on Magical Properties carries a reinvigorated sense of boldness, bringing his lyrics to the foreground while weaving uplifting melodies and ecstatic beats into beautiful works of pop.

Culture Shock Presents Gramatik-Leave Your Mark Tour

Culture Shock Presents Gramatik-Leave Your Mark Tour

Oct 17, 8:00pm

Flagstaff, Arizona

8PM, All Ages, $23 presale, $27 day of show, At The Orpheum Theater

www.gramatik.net/

Mixing that electro thump with the sample-heavy boom-bap of hip-hop, DJ/producer Gramatik was born in Portoroz, Slovenia, but he always seemed bound for Brooklyn. It was an older sister with a large cassette collection who turned the young Gramatik on to tapes of funk, jazz, R&B, and other genres that naturally lent themselves to dancefloors. By the time he was 13, he was making beats on his PC, and by the time he was in his late teens, his productions had earned him a loyal fan base and, eventually, the attention of the Colorado-based Pretty Lights. The like-minded producer signed to Gramatik to his Web label, also dubbed Pretty Lights, and released his Beatz & Pieces, Vol. 1 album in 2011. The #DigitalFreedom EP followed in 2012 along with Gramatik's new apartment in Brooklyn.

haywyremusic.com/
Haywyre consists of Martin Vogt, who has been studying piano since the age of six. His interest in the production of various genres of electronic music and piano instrumentals began growing when he lived in Austria; there, he was exposed to jazz and hip-hop for the first time. Shortly after moving back to the U.S. in 2008, Haywyre was created. Now, his mission can be defined by providing his listeners with music that presents variety, originality, and ideas stemming from his jazz and classical knowledge base. The most general description to Martin’s sound can be described as memorable melodies and (jazz / classically influenced) chord progressions in the context of progressive electronic music. Synthetic and organic elements combine in works inspired by artists such as Noisia, Flying Lotus, KOAN Sound, Hans Zimmer, Clint Mansell, Austin Peralta, and Abdullah Ibrahim. His main compositional tool is the piano; countless nights are spent drafting harmonic and melodic outlines by improvising. For live performances, Haywyre also includes his 88-key midi-keyboard to perform the melodies while triggering the stems to the rest of the pieces. His guitar work can also be heard in many tracks (and sometimes other instruments, such as the Duduk, as well). So far, he has mastered every release himself (except the Draw The Line EP).

freddytodd.com/
Freddy Todd makes electronic music in a blend of modern dubstep and glitch-hop styles. He grew up on the drums and then moved to the piano/keys and guitar/bass. These combined skills offered his musical synergy to disperse in the electronic scene when he started producing on Fruity Loops Studio in 2004, as well as forming a band and channeling live music around the same time. Making a genre of its own, Freddy combines limitless genres from soul to hip hop to funk-slime to psychedelic rock to dub all in an electronic glitched out bass driven blender. His EP’s include Ghost Dance Messiah (2009), Hallowz Eve (2009), iLLegaL summer ‘stache (2010), Winter Soulstice (2011). Some are available for free download at freddytodd.bandcamp.com/

Cherub is a sexy electro-pop duo that is the dance love-child of 80’s funk, and pop-music from the future. The members of Cherub, Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber, share a love for honest original music and vibrant live performance, with a common goal to share a little bit of sex, a little bit of drugs, and a whole lot of love with people across the globe.

“Ghost Beach are the latest pop pioneers to set the internet ablaze with only a couple singles floating around and without any major label backing. The New York-based duo of Josh Ocean and Eric “Doc” Mendelsohn take their ’80s influences one step further with Ghost Beach. Only a few months old, they’ve already perfected a retro-future aesthetic that sounds like the holy trifecta of The Police, Depeche Mode, and Daft Punk, with a little Passion Pit sprinkled on top for good measure. Josh plays the jilted lover with vocal panache as Eric’s soaring synths, guitars and forever young harmonies are plucked right out of Neverland. Ghost Beach is more about a time than a place, and that time is now.” - Andrew Hwang (Neon Gold)

GiBBZ is a Singer/Producer/Alter ego of Mike Gibney. After receiving a "degree" from The Berklee School of Music, Mike Gibney began working full time in and out of the studio for such artists as Soulive, Lettuce, Talib Kweli, Pharaoh Monch, Consequence, and others. After 4 years of working in a professional music environment as an engineer, he realized being an engineer is a thankless, miserable existence. Soon after, he met members of what is now the Lowtemp label, including Gramatik and Exmag. They convinced him that it's OK to drink copious amounts of alcohol and make everyone within a 30 ft radius uncomfortable. Out of this drunken, obnoxious, perverted, glutinous, offensive mess of a man, GiBBZ was born.

MitiS, brought up a Classical pianist in Pennsylvania, has been making his way into the Electronic music scene for the past two years and has been producing tracks from genres Dubstep to Electro.

"I just wanna share good music, have it be through performance or a small, simple social setting. Music is what I do, I wouldn't change that for anything. Have it be a Chopin piece playing in a hall, or a dirty bass kickin' the club's ass, I'm down for either..."

After experiencing the classical world of piano playing in renowned Halls such as Carnegie Hall in Manhattan NY, and the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Joe Torre became MitiS to give the Dance music scene a run for it's money. "I find myself unable to stop making phat basses, heavy beats, and throwing melodies into the mix… I Can't think of anything else more appetizing; It's the new age Classical.

#BEARGRILLZ

Proving that opposable thumbs or a basic grasp of the human language are not necessary prerequisites for EDM domination, allow us to introduce to you Bear Grillz. He's certainly not your standard 28 year-old grizzly bear...

Hailing from Yosemite national park, Grillz's story begins on a typical afternoon spent growling at marmots and eating tourists. While busy trying to digest one particularly tricky mountain climber, he discovered amongst his possessions something called a 'MacBook Pro'. Fast forward 9 months, 6,000 YouTube tutorials and a duck later and we have his debut creation, The 'High Grade' EP!

Kill The Noise with Milo & Otis, Ape Drums

Kill The Noise with Milo & Otis, Ape Drums

Oct 7, 8:00pm

The Orpheum Theater
15 W Aspen Ave
Flagstaff, AZ  86001 Map

In a time when the internet and dancefloors around the world are saturated with all types of artists and performers, it's difficult for emerging names to carve out their own niche in the scene and have their sound heard by the masses. However, the dynamic production force known as Kill The Noise has done just that in the small amount of time since their introduction to the electro/house scene just before the turn of the new year.

Upon further inspection, the origin of this unique and refined sound is apparent. The project emerges from the same studio of NY-based avant garde drum & bass front runner Ewun, as well as the brand new, highly regarded mash-up/IDM project Ludachrist. The minds behind these projects are no strangers to the electronic music scene, having already traveled the globe in various other successful musical endeavors.

Tight production, creative, original, and innovative ideas begin to describe the sound Kill The Noise is known for. While some compositions growl with angry, distorted synth lines and glitchy sample edits, others lean towards the more playful, funkier side with addictive melodic hooks and lyrics, complimenting additional productions of the more techno-inspired realm of pumping side-chained beats and infectious rhythms.

This sound has resonated throughout the blogosphere and indie/ electronic dance communities, and has been embraced by both old and new generations of artists and enthusiasts. Commanding attention from its listeners, Kill The Noise has earned support from a diverse selection of notable players in the global electronic dance music community. Names such as Chromeo, Ocelot, Franki Chan of Iheartcomix, LA Riots, Scion Automotive Company, Treasure Fingers, Klever, Craze, Le Castle Vania, and Juxtapoz Magazine, just to name a few - not to mention the plethora of music blogs all over the world who have helped to spread the growing reputation of KTN. Whether it is an original composition or remix, the music stands out from the pack as something special to both the average and avid listeners.

2008 is already shaping up to be huge for Kill The Noise with a truckload of new material in the pipelines including various remixes and a debut EP of original material entitled 'KILL KILL KILL'. All in addition to a growling list of high-profile performances. Kill The Noise is on a mission to prove it's name to be true... Kill the noise, kill the production, kill the scene, and become the most influential production outfit on the block.

Describing his sound as "neon music", this young artist is largely inspired by video games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Beatmania IIDX. His production methods prove to be just as interesting which stem from the demoscene/tracker music scene. While extremely computer and programming driven, each of the tracks on his debut EP pack an enormous amount of soul and depth. He has built his own unique soundscape of bright synthesizers, chords, and melodies overtop very rhythmic and often times unpredictable beats.

Doug and David's Birthday Bash featuring Phutureprimitive and Unlimited Gravity

Nov 16, 9:00pm

Flagstaff, Arizona

Come celebrate the anniversary of Culture Shock, along with the birthdays of Flagstaff icon Doug Quick and the former International Man of Leisure, current Man About Town, David Mitchell with the banging sounds of Phutureprimitive and Unlimited Gravity!

www.phutureprimitive.com/
Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Bay Area producer and songwriter Rain. Early childhood photos reveal Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear… a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination with music, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation… and Phutureprimitive was born.
